With iOS 12, Siri can do a lot more than ever before. When you pair Siri with Apple’s Shortcuts app, you can set up custom shortcut commands to have Siri help you with personalized tasks. Watch this video to learn how to use the Shortcuts app, how to set up pre-made shortcuts, and how to make your own shortcuts!
Although Shortcuts is made by Apple, it’s not one of the apps that comes built in with iOS 12, but you can download it for free from the app store. Once the download is complete, open Shortcuts. To choose a pre-made shortcut from Apple’s library, tap Gallery. If you scroll down on this page, you’ll see several different categories of shortcuts, like Essentials, Morning Routine, Stay Healthy, and more. Scroll horizontally in a category to see more shortcuts in that category. Tap a shortcut to read more about it. If you want to enable this shortcut on your device, tap Get Shortcut at the bottom. That shortcut will then be added to your library. You can add as many of these as you’d like. Tap Library to go back to your personal shortcut library.
If you don’t see a pre-made shortcut that suits your needs, you can create your own. Tap Create Shortcut to get started. Now you can add actions to your shortcut. This is where you can choose how complicated you want to make things. The Shortcuts app allows you to create a single shortcut for a series of actions, or you can make it simple with just one action. For demonstration purposes, I’m going to create a shortcut to open the TechBoomers.com website. Here I’m selecting the URL action. Then typing in the URL I want to create a shortcut for. Edit your shortcut’s details by tapping the settings icon in the top right. Tap Name to add a custom name for your shortcut. Tap Icon to customize the icon for this shortcut. To run this shortcut with your voice, tap Add to Siri. Here you can record a custom command for this shortcut. Tap the Record button, then say the command you want to assign to this shortcut. When you’re done, tap the Stop button. Tap Done in the top right corner to save. Now you can activate Siri and say the command for the shortcut you just created to test it out.
